Owning a horse in summer is basically a full-time weather forecast, and while we're all checking the temperature, it's easy to forget about the UV.

UV Affects Horses Too (Yes, Really)

We're all much better at remembering our own SPF these days, but horses need protecting from the sun too.

Pink noses, white markings and lightly pigmented skin are particularly vulnerable to UV damage. Too much sun can lead to painful sunburn and irritated skin, and it doesn't have to be a heatwave either. UV levels can still be surprisingly high on cloudy days (it's crazy)!

A horse-specific sun block, like the Lincoln sun bloc, is one of the easiest ways to help protect sensitive areas before turnout or riding. It takes less time than untangling a tail, and your horse will definitely appreciate it more.

Shade and Airflow - Your Stable's Best Tools

If your horse has ever planted themselves under the only tree in the field looking personally offended by the weather, they're probably onto something.

Limiting time in direct sun during the middle of the day can make a real difference, especially when UV levels are at their highest between 10am and 3pm. If your horse is stabled during those hours, keeping plenty of fresh air moving through the stable is just as important.
