Low on Vitamin D? Your Horse Might Be Too

Posted by Equine Essentials Direct on 16th Oct 2026

As the days get shorter and the sunshine starts to make fewer appearances, it’s worth giving your horse’s general wellbeing extra attention. We all have days when the darker weather leaves us feeling a little less energetic, and our horses can experience changes in mood and routine too.

If your horse seems a little quieter than usual, their vitamin D levels could be worth looking into. Vitamin D helps support healthy bones, muscles and immune system. Horses can make vitamin D through exposure to sunlight, but during the darker months, they may not get as much sunshine as they did during summer - especially if they spend more time snuggled up in the stable.

This doesn’t mean you need to panic-buy every supplement on the shelf. It is a good time to check that your horse’s everyday diet is giving them the support they need.

Support their everyday health

A balanced diet is the best place to start. Good-quality forage, fresh water and a suitable feed plan all help build the foundations for a happy, healthy horse.

A vitamin and mineral supplement can help, but no two horses are quite the same. Things like age, how hard they work, what they eat and how they're feeling can all make a difference.

Keep an eye on their mood

Routines change in autumn, and your horse's energy and behaviour might too. A little extra attention goes a long way at this time of year, and keeping a stash of tasty treats nearby is the horse equivalent of enjoying a hot chocolate on a chilly day.

Be proactive this autumn

As the sunlight fades, take a few minutes to review your horse’s routine. Are they eating well? Keeping a healthy weight? Moving comfortably? Are they bright and behaving as usual?

Small changes can make a big difference, especially when they’re spotted early. With regular vet care, a suitable diet and plenty of cuddles, the right supplements can be a helpful part of your horse’s overall wellbeing plan.

After all, autumn may bring darker evenings, but your horse can still shine bright this season.
