Improve Your Bond With Your Horse

Improve Your Bond With Your Horse

Posted by Equine Essentials Direct on 14th Sep 2026

Whether you have just brought a new horse home or you are a rider still finding your feet, building that connection takes time, and that is completely normal. Trust between horse and rider is not something that happens overnight, but the good news is that the small, everyday things matter more than you might think.

Here are a few tips to help you and your horse get there.

Spend time together

Some of the best bonding happens when you are not in the saddle at all. Grooming, hand grazing, or just quietly hanging out near your horse helps them get used to your presence and your scent. It sounds simple, but horses that associate you with calm, positive moments are far more likely to feel at ease when you do ride.

Be consistent and try some groundwork

Horses are creatures of routine. Turning up at the same time, handling them the same way, and keeping your cues clear and predictable makes a huge difference to how settled and trusting your horse feels around you.

Alongside that, simple groundwork exercises like leading, lunging, and gentle desensitisation help your horse learn to read your body language and build confidence in you as their leader.

Stay calm and keep it positive

Horses pick up on your energy more than you might realise. If you are tense, they often are too. Taking a breath, slowing down, and rewarding good behaviour goes a long way. A well-timed treat after a positive moment is a lovely way to reinforce that trust - why not keep a stash of horse treats in your pocket to reward those good moments?

Celebrate the small wins

Small moments matter. A horse that stands quietly for tacking up, or one that walks calmly into a space they were nervous about last week, these are worth noticing. Building a bond is a long game, and every small step forward counts.

Be patient with yourself as much as your horse. The relationship you are building is worth every moment you put into it.
