Isn’t it wonderful to see the sun shining? There’s something to be said about feeling the warmth on your back when out enjoying a summer hack, but it can be difficult to get your clothing right. Here are our top tips for keeping cool when riding during the summer months.

Firstly, do make sure that the temperature is not too high before you head out because it is important to put the safety of you and your horse first. Early in the morning or last thing at night are usually the optimum times for a ride, avoiding the full heat of the sun. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to both you and your horse even if the weather appears to be overcast. Here at Equine Essentials Direct, we stock Lincoln Sun Bloc and Gold Label Sun Guard, which provide maximum protection for your animal, designed to safeguard delicate, exposed areas that are most at risk of sunburn.

You may feel like dressing down but covering up when it gets warm is essential to protect your arms from both the sun and itchy insect bites. Choose lightweight, breathable tops with long sleeves such as a LeMieux soft shell jacket. Shires also offers a great range of stylish designs combining fashion and functionality. If you can’t resist our latest baselayers, Cameo and LeMieux have some lovely options for you. Just don’t forget your body protectorriding hat and the all-important fly repellent!

For the lower half of your body, we recommend wearing jodhpurs, tights and breeches in breathable fabrics for maximum comfort. The Cameo Equestrian Apollo Air Storm Gent’s Breeches are ideal for all-weather riding thanks to the stretchy material. For the ladies, Cameo Riding Tights are perfect for everyday wear, whatever the weather. They come in a choice of nine chic colours, so why not be inspired to embrace a bold summer shade such as teal, damson, aubergine or terracotta? For the ultimate in sweat-resistant, UV-protected riding breeches, consider going for natural bamboo breeches. Both Legacy and Cameo have some beautiful designs, promising to keep you cool in warm weather, and warm in cooler weather.

As for your footwear, choose short or ventilated riding boots to prevent overheating. We love the Brogini range because it is both hard-wearing and affordable. There are many different styles available, so you are sure to find the perfect match. Accessorise with light and airy summer riding gloves, such as the LeMieux Soleil Mesh version with four-way stretch power mesh, providing an anti-slip hold on the reins, even if your hands feel sweaty. What’s more, we stock a wide range of colourful Hy Equestrian socks made with added bamboo, allowing moisture to wick away so your feet keep feeling fresh. Will you be tempted by a three-pack of Hy Equestrian Tropical Vibes socks for a real feel of summer?

On return from your ride, remember to clean off any sweat with a citronella wash to help keep the flies at bay. It is a good idea to invest in either a fly rug, fly fringe, fly hood or fly mask to protect your horse from the risk of infection from biting insects. These products are incredibly popular with our customers because it is definitely a case of prevention is better than cure.
