Essential Items for Beginner Dressage Riders

Posted by Equine Essentials Direct on 27th May 2026

Entering your first dressage competition can feel a little overwhelming. One minute you’re happily pottering around at home, and the next you’re panic-ordering hair nets at 11pm while wondering whether anyone will notice if you forget your test halfway through.

But hold your horses! Dressage doesn’t have to be scary or super fancy. Most beginner competitions are friendly and relaxed. You don’t need Olympic-level turnout or a horse who moves like Valegro. You simply need comfortable kit, smart turnout and a horse who is willing to listen (mostly)!

Start With the Tack

Your horse’s comfort comes first. A well-fitted dressage saddle helps you sit securely and stay balanced, while a comfortable bridle supports clear communication. That is, unless your horse spots a suspicious flower pot and forgets everything it has ever learned.

Clean tack, polished boots and a tidy saddle pad can make your whole turnout look beautifully put together. Think of it as the equestrian version of “fake it till you make it”.

Make sure to check out our saddlery range, including our saddles and bridles!

What Do You Actually Wear?

This is the bit many riders love to overthink. Traditional dressage wear usually includes light-coloured breeches, a competition shirt, stock and show jacket.

White or cream breeches look wonderfully smart in the arena, although they can be vulnerable to mud, slobber and enthusiastic grass stains. A smart show jacket pulls everything together, while a comfortable shirt is a blessing once the warm-up begins and the nerves kick in.

Stocks may look complicated, but they’re simply part of the traditional dressage look and instantly make you feel more official.

Our competition wear range includes jackets, shirts, stocks and those all-important finishing touches!

The Small Things Matter

It’s never the big things people forget. It’s the random little things.

Hair nets. Gloves. Spare hair bands. Safety pins. Yet somehow you end up with plaiting bands mysteriously multiplying in every pocket you own.

Having a few essential accessories packed beforehand makes competition mornings far less chaotic, especially when your horse picks that same morning to forget how loading works.

Everyone Starts Somewhere

Every dressage rider has had a first competition. We’ve all gone off course, entered the wrong marker or saluted with rather too much enthusiasm.

The important thing is to have a go, enjoy the experience and celebrate the small wins. If you leave the arena smiling, your horse has only spooked once and nobody lost a glove, we’d call that a fabulous first test!
