The Three-Layer Rule
Posted by Equine Essentials Direct on 17th Apr 2023
The unpredictable spring weather means we need to be prepared for every eventuality when out riding. The best way to keep warm and dry, whatever the weather conditions, is to layer up! If you invest in the right gear, you won’t regret it, as you will ultimately feel more comfortable and enjoy a fun ride.
There are a few golden rules equestrians must follow to make sure they maintain the optimum temperature at all times. It is easy to peel off layers if you feel too hot, but much harder to conjure up an extra layer when battling the extremities.
The idea behind a layering system is to retain heat close to your body, get rid of any moisture, and keep out the weather. The goal of a base layer is therefore to conserve warmth, a mid layer is used to provide insulation, whilst an outer layer will protect you from the wind, rain and snow.
Rule 1: A Base Layer as a Second Skin
The job of the layer closest to your body is to trap warm air whilst removing moisture from sweating to make sure you stay dry. Although it needs to be close-fitting, comfort is absolutely key.
It is recommended that you go for synthetic materials or natural fabrics that are more breathable than the likes of cotton, which absorbs the moisture and makes you feel cold. The beauty of base layers made from modern materials is that they can also be worn on their own on hotter days.
At Equine Essentials Direct, we offer a host of stylish base layers combining fashion and functionality. The LeMieux range has been designed to coordinate with the collection of hat silks, saddle pads, polo bandages and fly hoods in the brand’s popular colours of Wisteria, Mist and Kiwi to name a few.
Rule 2: A Mid Layer for Insulation
The middle layer of clothing not only adds extra warmth, but it also insulates the body, preventing the loss of heat. The more efficient it is, the warmer you will feel! Just like the base layer, the mid layer needs to be lightweight and breathable, and you have the luxury of choosing from a number of different options. Fleeces are a popular choice because they dry fast when they get wet. Other alternatives include half-zip jackets and synthetic filled waistcoats.
Whatever you decide, just ensure it fits well and doesn’t restrict your movement when out hacking. The LeMieux Elite range provides hoodies, crew jackets, soft shell jackets and gilets. The options are endless, so if you would like any advice before you buy, our friendly team would be more than happy to help.
Rule 3: An Outer Layer for Weather-Proofing
A final layer will shield you from the elements, which is especially important when wind, rain or snow is forecast.
You should go for a jacket or coat that is both windproof and waterproof, with a hood for added protection. A design that has been specially devised for equestrians will make sure movement is not restricted, as well as including other practical features such as riding vents.
Complete your outfit with a pair of Shires breeches, waterproof over-trousers, and some Rhinegold Country boots!
Now that you look the part, all that’s left is for you to enjoy some quality time with your horse or pony, whatever the spring weather throws at you.
