What is trail riding?
Hacking, also called trail riding, is simply enjoying a ride outside the arena. It might be along a bridlepath, through woodland, or across open countryside. It’s a wonderful way to build your horse’s confidence in new surroundings and to introduce them to sights and sounds they won’t find in the school.
How to prep for a trail ride
Before you saddle up and head off into the sunset, a little prep goes a long way.
- Plan your route. Are there roads to cross, gates to open, or private land to avoid? Nothing kills the mood like realising you’ve wandered into someone’s back garden.
- Check the weather. A sunny morning can turn into a soggy afternoon faster than you can say “why didn’t I bring my waterproof?”
- Think safety first. The more prepared you are, the more you can relax and enjoy the ride. And isn’t that the whole point?
What to wear while trail riding
Having the right gear is half the battle. Here’s what we recommend for staying safe, comfortable, and stylish enough to wave at dog walkers with confidence.
A hard-wearing riding hat
Your hat is non-negotiable. Comfort and ventilation are key if you’re out all day. The Rhinegold Pro Carbon Riding Hat ticks all the boxes with its padded leather harness, removable Cool Max lining, and central ventilation.
Body protector
A body protector is also incredibly important. The Mackey Equi-sential Adult Flexi Body Protector is designed with triangular segments so you can move freely while still being protected. Bonus points for being dirt-resistant, because let’s be honest, mud is inevitable.
Hi-vis for horse and rider
Your horse deserves to be just as visible as you are. The LeMieux Reflective Exercise Sheet is a fantastic option, with a hi-vis outer layer and a soft fleece lining. It keeps your horse warm, dry, and easy to spot, no matter the weather or time of day.
Combine it with the Hy Equestrian Reflector Tail Guard and reflective LeMieux Grafter Brushing Boots for extra visibility while out hacking.
But hi-vis isn’t just for horses. The Cameo Equestrian Water Repellent Hi-Viz Jacket keeps you safe and seen with bright colours and reflective strips. And like any good jacket, it’s also water-repellent and scuff-resistant.
Trail riding boots
Unlike riding in a competition, going out on a hack means you can wear whatever boots you like! We recommend something waterproof and rugged enough to handle the elements, but comfy enough for long rides.
Rhinegold’s Kentucky Zip Front Paddock Boots are the perfect choice for hacking, with elastic sides for great range of movement and durable non-slip soles.
Warm, waterproof riding wear
Hacking is great fun all year round, whether you’re heading out on warm summer evenings or bright winter mornings. When the weather gets cool or damp (which is often in the UK!) you’ll want to layer up.
A fleece layer like the LeMieux Frances Quarter Zip Fleece is a lightweight, cosy option for keeping you warm.
Fleeces get uncomfortable very quickly in the rain though, so you also need a decent waterproof. EQUIDRY’s new Evolution Thin Fleece Coat is 100% waterproof and oversized to fit over a body protector.
